2000 FEDERAL CENSUS OF NATIVE AMERICAN POPULATION

The Native American Indian Population in the state of South Dakota has increased by 9,465 persons from the same census of 1990! (2010 not yet available).  South Dakota registers eleventh in total Native American Indian population in the United States registering 60,335 persons in 2000 vs: 50,820 in 1990.

The Top Ten states registering Native American Indian populations are as follows:

  1.  California
  2.  Oklahoma
  3.  Arizona
  4.  New Mexico
  5. Washington
  6. Alaska
  7. Texas
  8. North Carolina
  9. New York
  10. Florida
  11. South Dakota ~ 60, 335 (+8.45 % OVER 1990 census)
  12. Michigan ~ 59, 887 (+ 6.92% over 1990 census)

The TOTAL NATIVE AMERICAN INDIAN POPULATION IN 2000 was as follows: 2,031,141. The total overall birth rates for Native American Indian Populations has risen in percentage in 47 of the 50 states! ( Hooray!).

The Sioux Tribe is the 3rd largest tribe by population. (Cherokee being #1, Navajo being #2). Hopefully, the 2010 Census will take these numbers to at least 1,500,000 if not 3,000,000, if the census for 2010 was not under reported. That’s enough people of voting age to swing a national election!
